Seasonal Events in Homer

Homer is known for its richly diverse arts community as well as a “foodie” town. Restaurants are open year-round and major events take place all year as well. Come enjoy Homer, all seasons. There's something for everyone.

Winter

Annual Winter Carnival Parade

(2nd Friday of February)

A fun-filled week of festivities to include concerts at local venues, special exhibits at the Pratt Museum, ice races, and more. Bundle up on Saturday and come out for the annual Winter Carnival Parade along Pioneer Avenue at noon featuring floats, antique cars, animals, music and dance. Sponsored by the Homer Chamber of Commerce.


Annual Homer Winter King Salmon Tournament

(3rd Saturday of March)

Every March anglers take to the waters of the Kachemak Bay in search of King Salmon. This one-day tournament awards over $100,000 in cash and merchandise prizes to the largest Kings caught. At the end of the day, watch the anglers bring in and weigh their fish, enjoy local food, a beer garden, music, and awards ceremony.

Spring

Annual Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival

This is Alaska’s largest wildlife viewing festival, celebrating the return of spring and the active bird migration. Try your luck at spotting over 130 migratory bird species, as well as numerous resident species. The festival boasts of presentations from renowned bird authorities, workshops and field trips.


50th Birthday Event for Kachemak Bay State Park

Join Friends of the Kachemak Bay State Park to celebrate the Park’s 50th anniversary. Come out and enjoy good food and activities honoring this 380,000-acre park, the first in the state.

Summer

Homer’s Farmers Market

This summer outdoor Farmer's Market, on the way to the Homer Spit offers not only fresh produce and art but also performing artists on stage. Local farmers and gardeners sell the bounty from their fields and greenhouses, and peonies farmers offer fresh flowers. There are local food vendors with everything from seafood chowder, fish tacos, fresh pretzels, and pies. Other vendors include fireweed honey, salsa, and jams. The market is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.


Homer Highland Games

This traditional Scottish event starts with music Friday night and continues with music, food, competition, and history. Everyone is welcome to come out and compete in the caber toss, “kilted mile” footrace and more. Located at Karen Hornaday Park.


4th of July Parade

This traditional small-town parade boasts of over 50 parade participants. Categories include bikes, antique cars, animals, music and dance and more! Come join the festivities at 6 pm along Pioneer Avenue.


Homer Garden Club Annual Tour

Tour five special gardens in the local area of both flowers and vegetables. Participants will be provided with an area map of the gardens showcased and a special artistic pin as admittance pass.


Halibut Cove Live

This concert takes place across the bay at Quiet Place Lodge and sells out every year. The stage is actually a floating stage, the only one in Alaska. Enjoy gourmet seafood from the deck of the Lodge, take in the ocean views and listen to first-class music.


Salmonfest Music Festival – Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds

Three full days of non-stop music featuring worldwide artists on stages throughout the venue. Enjoy Blue Grass, Blues, Rock & Roll, Country, Folk, Funk and more! Food vendors, beer garden, craft vendors.

Autumn

The Kachemak Bay Wooden Boat Festival

Events include sea chanteys, tall tales and fisher poets at the Salty Dawg Saloon, keynote speakers at the Islands and Ocean visitor center theater followed by movies related to fishing and sailing, and building wooden yachts. Then on Saturday the wooden boat show opens on the Spit and features a tour of the waters includes a WWII era wooden tug converted for charter use, kids boat building, marine demonstrations (including knot tying, net mending, and bronze casting. Sponsored by the Kachemak Bay Wooden Boat Society.


Alaska World Arts Festival

This two-week celebration features worldwide artists to include music performances, exhibits, plays, readings, studio tours, theatre, film, visual arts, comedy and more. Events are held at more than 50 venues in the area.
