Meet the Host - Evelyn Harden

Bryan and Karen standing on front porch near flowers I returned to Homer in June 2020 to pursue my dream of owning a resort on the shores of the beautiful Kachemak Bay. I fell in love with Alaska Adventure Cabins, originally founded and expanded over a 20 year period by Bryan and Karen Zak, longtime residents of Homer. Homer is world-famous for its views and so many other attractions, and in my opinion, the most beautiful place on earth and I want the whole world to experience it.

Homer is home for me. Even though I lived in Southeast Alaska and spent the last 20 years in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley in AK, my heart has always been in Homer. I actually spent the first half of my childhood in Homer. I have fond memories of my family homesteading here, which is somewhat like a life-long family camping trip, although now we might call it “Glamping” since the house was weather-tight, and the wood stove kept it toasty. Outside the city limits of Homer, electricity, running water and indoor facilities were non-existent, and media communication was limited to a battery-operated, transistor radio. My parents, like many other homesteaders, had packed up their small family and traveled from the Lower 48 to start new lives in Alaska. A year later my Mom flew with the doctor in his bush plane over to the medical facility in Seldovia to birth my twin brother and I, making a total of five children. So that is my humble Alaska beginnings.

There is no place like Homer; the beautiful countryside, mountains, Kachemak Bay, glaciers and the community spirit. I look forward to hosting you, and while you’re here, you may be even be greeted by my small friendly, older dog Pepi, and cat Aphrodite. I welcome the opportunity to help you make your visit the trip of a lifetime.

Legacy Owners

Bryan and Karen standing on front porch near flowersBryan and Karen Zak moved to Alaska in 1998 from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Bryan retired from the Air Force in 1997 and began talking about moving to Alaska non-stop until Karen agreed!

One winter day in February 2000, Karen and Bryan came upon the property on Baycrest Hill for sale, they pulled up to the property and walked around and Bryan said, "There is no better view in Homer than this location, can you imagine if visitors could experience this view?"

The property was carefully developed for visitors with privacy in mind, exceptional views and all the comforts of home. Over the years Bryan and Karen have added many unique accommodations with the vision to provide guests with that one-of-a-kind experience.

Karen and Bryan enjoy sharing with guests the bounty of activities available in the local area such as the best fishing spots, hiking trails, exceptional restaurants, and expansive artist community. Bryan served as Mayor from 2015 until 2018, after which be began his acting career in this wonderful community. Karen retired as Executive Director of the Homer Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center in 2017.

Fantastic Views

"Our cabin was neat and clean with fantastic views. But what was wonderful was the care that the owner Karen gave us."
